Ostriches Once Roamed Lanzarote

A recent series of excavations in the area surrounding Orzola, in the north of Lanzarote, has uncovered the fossilized eggs of a bird related to the ostrich, which lived on the island between 5 and 6 million years ago during the Miocene period.

In the Swim at the Jameos del Agua

The Spanish Olympic swimmer, Thaïs Henriquez, who is also Canarian, took part in a promotional event last week at the Jameos del Agua. Thaïs is a silver medal holder in synchronized swimming from the Olympics in 2008.
The swimmer declared that she is ‘in love with Lanzarote’ and was delighted to participate in a promotional campaign to highlight the island´s sporting credentials, with a display of her aquatic skills in the beautiful pool at the Jameos.

High Winds Ground Flights

The high winds experienced across Lanzarote on Sunday 31st July forced two flights to be cancelled. With gusts of up to 80 kilometres recorded, several flights were also rerouted and twenty-four suffered delays.
The two flights that were cancelled were destined for Dusseldorf in Germany and Madrid. Four flights were redirected to land at Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, whilst the delays for both arrivals and departures at Lanzarote airport were an average of 57 minutes long.

June 2011 Hottest Month in 40 Years

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) yesterday confirmed the Canary Islands saw the highest temperatures in June for the last forty years. Normally, average temperatures for the islands in June hover between 20 and 23.5º C.
However, in June 2011 the prolonged period of the heat wave that was experienced between the 21st and 24th of the month saw temperatures of 40ºC and above in both coastal and interior regions of the islands.
