Peak Condition
Spanish athlete Antonio de la Rosa is currently participating in a new challenge to climb each of the highest peaks on the seven islands that make up the Canarian archipelago in seven days. He began yesterday with a kayak crossing between Famara on Lanzarote and La Graciosa, landing at Caleta del Cebo so that he could climb the highest peak on the eighth Canarian island, Las Agujas, which stands at 266 metres.
Having climbed the volcano on La Graciosa it was back to the kayak to cross the Rio to Orzola, the northern most town on Lanzarote. This part of the crossing was particularly demanding, as by this time the waves were measuring some two metres in height, making the journey hazardous as well as uncomfortable. However, de la Rosa took it in his stride and landed at Orzola at 14.20, without too much difficulty.
From here he took a southerly route by bike, passing the highest peak at the Peñas del Chache, which stands at 670 metres. And eventually ended up in Playa Blanca, at 19.30 in the evening, having started out at 9.40 in the morning in Famara. From Playa Blanca, the next leg of the journey was another sea crossing by kayak, covering the Bocaina Straits in less than two hours, despite further encounters with high waves. Having landed at Corralejo at 21.10, the cycle ride across Fuerteventura to its southern most tip was scheduled for the following day.
