Canaries Stand Tall At Excel

11 November 2009 One Comment

The Canary Island Tourist Board picked up a prestigious award for the best exhibition stand at the World Travel Market event yesterday.  Which is being staged at the Excel Centre in East London.

Tourism Minister Rita Martin was in attendance to accept the award.  Which has come against a backdrop of mounting criticism of the current marketing campaign for the archipelago.  As critics have accused the Tourist Board of wasteful expenditure on stunts such as the recent promotional trip to Iceland.  Where 100 Lanzaroteños were dispatched to invite 100 Icelandic residents to visit the island.  In the hope that subsequent word of mouth and internet led testimonials on blogs and social media would lead to an uplift in arrivals from that country.

The award is well deserved, congratulations to them!
The 100 exchanges were not a gimmick but a very clever marketing trick that certainly got the message across – see how much controversy and subsequent exposure for the Canaries it’s generated!
