Canaries Go Bananas

9 February 2010 No Comment

Asprocan, the Canary Islands banana growers association has launched a new campaign to build awareness of the regions offering, in a market that has historically been dominated by large US companies.

In association with the Spanish government and the EU Asprocan have created a new brand mark – the European Taste symbol – to help promote Canarian bananas (and avocados) across Europe.  And are launching a marketing campaign across key markets such as Germany and Portugal. All of which is designed to communicate the unique characteristics of the platanos from the islands, the bulk of which are grown on Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Last year 291,000 tonnes of bananas were produced in the Canaries – and the islands proximity to mainland Europe gives growers a distinct advantage over their rivals.  As according to Pedro Monzon of export promotion organisation Proexca; “The ships only travel for three days, so the bananas arrive with a different level of ripeness compared to the fruit coming from overseas”.
