Run Rabbit Run

15 March 2010 No Comment

A state of emergency has been declared in Yaiza due to the dangerous number of rabbits that are currently running wild in this part of the island! As a result of this ‘plague’, the councillor for the Environment and Hunting, Placida Guerra, has issued a temporary hunting season to run until 1st June.

During this time, hunters will be able to capture live rabbits using dogs and also use ferrets to frighten them off. This measure is being taken to protect the agriculture that exists in the area, especially around the volcanic zone of Yaiza. As this is the location where many grape vines are cultivated.

Ferret use is only permitted with a maximum of one animal and only in conjunction with a Podenco, the Canarian breed of hunting dog. Any rabbits captured during this hunting season cannot be sold and must be let loose in other parts of the island.
