Ash Clouds Travel To and From Lanzarote

11 May 2010 No Comment

The volcanic ash cloud emanating from Iceland continues to cause problems for holidaymakers, as well as the island’s tourist industry. As Arrecife airport was briefly closed this morning along with other airports across the Canaries and Spain. Whilst occupancy levels in Lanzarote apartments and hotels nosedived in April to their lowest level so far this year. With ASOLAN – the islands hoteliers association – claiming that these figures were a direct consequence of cancellations and travel chaos caused by the Icelandic eruption.

During April just 62.52% of the island hotel and apartment beds were filled according to ASOLAN´s latest statistics. A figure that’s improved little on last April’s low of 61.25% and which is also well short of previous figures for this year. When occupancy levels reached as high as 75.36% just last month.
