Hats Off To La Graciosa

A new sculpture has just been inaugurated on the island of La Graciosa, in celebration of the unique style of hats worn by womenfolk on the eighth Canarian island. This eye-catching artwork has been placed on the seafront by one of the small beaches that lie in front of Caleta de Sebo and close to the Socio Cultural centre.
The work was created by local sculptors, Juan Agustín Padrón Pérez and Francisco Montelongo Hernández, using grey volcanic Arucas stone in the shape of a typical Graciosera hat.

Costume Drama In Arrecife

The avant garde Spanish costume artist Esteban Cedres will be heading up a scenic arts group this Friday 23rd July in Arrecife. The group can be seen in and around the centre of the capital from 11.30, performing and interacting with the general public in the areas stretching from the Four Corners to the Calle Real and on to the Castillo de San Gabriel.

Greenpeace Claim 60% Increase in Development On Lanzarote

Greenpeace voiced its concerns about the increase in urbanization on Lanzarote yesterday in the report “Destruction at all costs”, which analyses developments of the entire Spanish coastline.
 
The report claims that Lanzarote has seen an increase in constructed areas of 60% over the last seventeen years. However, Lanzarote is by no means the island that has seen the highest level of development, as Fuerteventura has seen its built-up areas increase by 159%. The average increase across all the islands in the last five years was up by 54% when Greenpeace claims …

Mamma Mia …Ryanair Announce New Flights From Italy

Leading budget airline Ryanair will introduce a new route between  Bologna in Italy and Lanzarote this November. Direct flights will connect the Italian city with the island at an initial cost of less than €45 return, taxes included.
A spokesman for Ryanair in Spain, Luis Fernandez Mellado, stated in a press release that the airline hopes to stimulate Italian visitors to come to Lanzarote over the coming winter. ‘Travel Tax’ Set For Take Off

The new coalition government in the UK are set to levy a new tax that could result in higher air fares to Lanzarote and all other destinations across the world.  According to recent news reports in the British media.  With the Liberal Democrat faction leading calls for a new per plane tax to replace the existing Air Passenger Duty charge.

6000 Cruise Passengers Head For Arrecife

The arrival of two cruise ships with more than 6,000 passengers on board has led to the municipal market of Arrecife to open one day earlier this week. As a result, instead of the usual schedule of Wednesday and Thursday, the market, which is held in Parque Ramirez Cerda, will actually take place on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Spring Concerts At The Caves

The Cuevas de los Verdes in the north of the island play host to a series of concerts this month. Kicking off on May 15th with a performance of Tibetan Bowls and Quartz, Violin and Flute, played by Yasuyo Tsuchiya, Iya Zhumaeva and Jose A. Manchado. With concert goers also able to enjoy a meal at the nearby Jameos del Agua directly after.

UK Arrivals Up 14% in March

The number of British tourists visiting Lanzarote rose by 14% last month, versus March 2009. According to figures just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics. However the overall rate of recovery of the islands tourist industry remains quite sluggish – up by just 3.2% during the first quarter of this year. And is still some way off reaching pre-crisis levels. Whilst other key markets such as Germany and Eire registered significant drops in visitor numbers .

Bermejo Launch Photo Contest

The Bodega of Bermejo wines has organized a photo competition to help promote the vineyard’s produce. The contest is open to amateur as well as professional photographers. Entries must be sent to the bodega by 20th May with as many as five photos per entrant permitted.
The theme of the competition is the world of Lanzarote wines and subject matter can range from images of the local landscape to pictures of the distinctively shaped bottles in which the product is sold. The prize for the winning entry will be €1000, …
