Brits The Biggest Holiday Boozers

A recent survey conducted by Trip Advisor has revealed that British tourists drink more than holidaymakers from other countries when enjoying a break abroad.  With 65% of the UK travelers surveyed admitting to imbibing more heavily when on holiday.  In comparison with an overall average of just 41% for all other nationalities.
Over 6000 tourists were surveyed in total and the results reveal that 29% of British holidaymakers drink more than five units per day.  Compared to just 10% for other nationalities.  On the upside however the survey also found that …

Ryanair Launch 7 Euro Flights From Milan

The budget flight operator Ryanair is launching a new route connecting Lanzarote with the Italian city of Milan. From April 13th the new flights will be operating on Wednesday and Sunday every week.  And to mark the launch of this new route Ryanair are selling off 500,000 seats at just 7 euros each.
It is hoped this additional service between the volcanic island and Italy will help to boost the number of Italian visitors travelling to Lanzarote this summer. Ryanair has already developed direct connections between Bologna and Venice and Lanzarote.

Fight Breaks Out on Ryanair Flight

Over 100 passengers were thrown off a Ryanair flight from Lanzarote to Belgium over the weekend as an argument over an excess baggage fee escalated into a full blown scuffle.
The fight erupted on a Ryanair flight service to Charleroi as a passenger travelling with a large band of Belgian students was told that he would have to pay an additional oversize bag fee or leave the plane.  The passenger refused and as a fight broke out stewards called for police assistance.  Resulting in the ejection of 102 of the 168 …

Canary Island Tourism Grows 7.61% in 2010

The number of foreign tourists visiting the Canary Islands rose by 7.61% last year, according to the latest figures just released by AENA.  With a recovery in the British market helping to fuel growth.
A total of 8.590.081 foreign tourists visited the Canary Islands during the course of 2010, with Tenerife remaining the most popular destination with 3,118,852 arrivals, followed by Gran Canarias with 2,481,672 foreign visitors.  Fulled by a 12% plus growth in British visitor numbers.

Canaries Music Festival Kicks Off In Lanzarote

The Canaries Music Festival gets underway this month, with Lanzarote playing host to a number of top classical artists across the course of January.  On the 8th the Norwegian ensemble the Trondheim Soloists will be performing at the Convento de Santa Domingo in the former island capital of Teguise.  Followed by an appearance by the English Concert at the Cueva de los Verdes on January 17th.  String quartet Pa-ga-nini round out the months agenda at the Teatro de Tias on January 29th.  Tickets for these events cost €15 per head …

Comdedy In Store At Los Mojitos

Finca De Uga Is The Big Cheese

Finca de Uga scooped a number of awards at the recent World Cheese Awards staged in Birmingham last week.  Walking off with no less than seven prizes, whilst other cheeses from the Canary Islands also performed well.
The World Cheese Awards 2010 which were held at the end of November in Birmingham saw 33 different prizes awarded to cheeses from the Canary Islands, including 1 super-gold and six gold trophies. Ryanair Open 3 New Bases In The Canary Islands

The Canary Island tourist industry received a timely boost last week.  As leading budget airline Ryanair announced their intention to create three new bases in the archipelago, in a move that is expected boost visitor numbers and generate thousands of jobs locally.
The estimated €400 million investment will result in two Ryanair planes being permanently based on Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife.  Along with the creation of 35 new routes from the UK and Eire to the islands.  The new bases will be opened in summer next year, but the planes …

Spanish Tourism Static Until 2012 Say WTCC

The World Travel Tourism Council has announced that they do not expect Spain´s tourist sector to register real growth until 2012, whilst worldwide they expect the world tourism market to expand by 2% over the next two years.
The World Travel Tourism Council last week issued its forecast for global tourist growth for the next two years, with expectations that overall growth worldwide in 2010 would be approximately 2%. The WTTC was reporting its views at the end of the World Travel Market fair in London last week.

Vodafone Invest 25 Million in The Canaries

Mobile phone and internet service provide Vodafone has announced plans to invest over €25 million in the Canary Islands.  As the company pushes ahead with deployment of is own fibre optic network in the archipelago – which is designed to connect with the WACS undersea cable off the West African coast.
Vodafones inaitive will break Telefonica´s current monopoly as the only operator with an underwater cable connecting the Canaries with the Iberian Peninsula.  According to Vodafone’s regional director the WACS cable is currently being laid in South Africa and will reach …
