Irish Arrivals Fall by 35% in October

The economic crisis in Eire is now starting to impact upon Lanzarote´s tourist sector.  According to the latest statistics just released by ISTAC, the Canarian Institute of Statistics.  Which reveal that visitor numbers from Eire fell by just over 35% last month versus October 2009 figures.
So far this year Lanzarote has welcomed a total of 137,730 holidaymakers from Eire.  And it now looks very likely that total arrivals for 2010 will fall well short of the 177,736 tourists who visited the island in 2009.  And even further off the boom …

Celebrate Día Internacional de los Pueblos in Costa Teguise

Lanzarote celebrates the diverse cultural background of its residents this coming Saturday in Costa Teguise.  As the third International Village Fair gets underway in the large car park area outside the Celeste Apartments.
The event runs from 11.00 to 18.00 and encompasses a whole raft of exhibits, including examples of typical artisan and culinary creations from numerous countries, including Spain, Columbia, Romania, Venezuela, Ecuador, Germany, Belgium, Cuba, Argentina, Great Britain, Senegal and Bolivia.

Rynair Shoot New Cabin Crew Calendar on Fuerteventura

Low cost airline Ryanair has just released its 2011 cabin crew calendar.  After polling punters to find out what sort of calendar they wanted, offering them the choice of male or female flight attendants.
The traditional option won out and the resulting shoot took place recently on the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura.  With Ryanair countering the obvious objectification reservations by donating up to €100,000 of the proceeds to a German charity, Tafel.  The calendars cost €10 each and can be purchased on flights as well as online.

White Tiger Cub Born at Rancho Texas

An albino Bengal tiger cub was born at Rancho Texas last month, the first of its kind to be born in the Canary Islands. The cub was actually born on the 18th of October but will not make its first public appearance until this Thursday, 11th November.
The female cub has been looked after by the animal handlers at the park, after it was rejected by its mother at birth. This doesn’t seem to have affected the baby tigress much as she has been gaining weight and becoming more playful by …

Police Clamp Down On Botellones

Local police on Lanzarote have launched a campaign against drinking in the streets and in public places, initially targeting the capital of Arrecife. With a total of 19 incidents recorded over the weekend, with alcohol being confiscated in the majority of cases.
At the same time, a number of late night bars received formal warnings for not shutting their doors at the correct time. Elsewhere, seven drink drivers were cautioned or detained for being under the influence whilst in charge of a vehicle. One driver in particular brought himself to the …

Ryanair Confirm Shannon Winter Flights

Ryanair have just announced that their Shannon to Lanzarote route will remain in operation over the winter season, despite other routes being cut from their flight roster. Flights will be offered from the end of October with winter sun destinations such as Lanzarote the main focus, whilst services such as from Shannon to Paris will be axed from November 1st.  At the same time, Ryanair will be reducing the number of flights it operates from Shannon airport by a fifth.

Fabulous Famara

Leading travel website Trip Advisor conducted a recent poll amongst its readers and found that the beach at Famara in Lanzarote was rated as the second best in the whole of Spain. Beaches in both the Canary Islands and the Balearics were selected as amongst the best Spain has to offer visiting tourists, with two of them found in the Canaries, whilst five of the top ten were on one of the Balearic Islands.

Los Marmoles Walkway Now Open

The new footpath connecting the ferry port at Los Mármoles and the city of Arrecife is ready for passengers arriving by cruise liners to use. Although there are still a few small finishing touches required, such as the placement of street furniture, the path itself is ready and has already begun to be used by visitors to the Lanzarote capital. The official inauguration of this pedestrian route is not likely to happen until September.

Half Million Euro Facelift for Costa Teguise

One of the central areas of Costa Teguise is about to undergo a major face-lift, with nearly half a million euros earmarked to improve how the Avenida El Jablillo looks. A meeting on Friday 9th July saw the approval of this project by the Canarian councilor for Tourism, Rita Martin.
The works get underway this week, with the expectation that they will last for nine months. Plans include reconditioning the pavements down this main street in the resort, using the local basalt rock to resurface the pedestrian areas. Much of the …

World’s Biggest Beach Towel Created in Gran Canaria

A massive towel big enough to reserve every sun lounger on the beach has been created on Gran Canaria, creating a new Guinness World Record in the process.  The world’s biggest beach towel measures 2,240 metres square and was created in Las Palmas by a team of 25 people in 15 days.                 
 On the day that it was unveiled more than 1000 beachgoers sunbathed on the towel.  The previous world record was set in Cyprus two years ago.
