Seconds Out…

The Latin Boxing World Champion will be defending his title against a local fighter next weekend, 12th December at the Sports Centre in Arrecife. Elkin José Ubardes, from Colombia, will be sparring against Lanzarote boxer, Alexis Callero, who is an ex-champion in Spain. Both competitors are fighting in the super middleweight category.
The bout is being organised by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and will consist of ten rounds of three minutes each. It is being billed as the most important fight of Alexis Callero’s career. The Lanzaroteño has fought 22 …

Natural Works Of Art

Catch the work of Pepe Dámaso this month -  the most prolific contemporary Canarian artist – at the Puerto Calero Gallery.  This eminent painter and sculptor was a close contemporary of Cesar Manrique´s and his work tends to focus on natural objects as well as more surreal landscapes.
His exhibition De La Naturaleza runs throughout November and the Galeria de Arte in Puerto Calero is open from 16.00 to 21.00 from Monday to Friday and 11.00 to 21.00 on Saturdays.

New Home At The Castillo

‘New Home 123…’ is an exhibition showcasing the work of three young German artists at the Castillo de San Gabriel in Arrecife. The show is part of the Bienal Off 2009 and focuses on the different points of view that modern, multicultural Lanzarote consists of.
The artists, Anneke van Zuethem, Anja Püchel and Nicola Aigne, hope to demonstrate that the image of the Canary Islands is not merely defined by tourism. It is the result of their end of degree projects in the disciplines of Architecture, Design and Media Studies at …

Music Marathon Festival

Lanzarote plays host to the island’s first Music Marathon Festival this coming weekend.  When entrants of all abilities and age groups will gather to run, jog, skate or generally move their bodies to live music provided by a number of local acts.  Whilst also raising money for good causes.

Surfs Up At Famara

The Islas Canarias Santa Surf Pro gets underway on Lanzarote in a couple of weeks time.  Attracting some of the leading riders from around the world.  Such as the latest American wunderkind of the waves Clay Marzo.
All of the action is taking place from November 1st to 7th at Playa San Juan.  Which is located at the opposite end of the village of Caleta de Famara from the huge main beach.  With the event starting at each day at around 10.00 hours.

Hey Hey We´re The  Monk-ees

A group of Tibetan Monks will be performing some of their traditional songs and dances around Lanzarote later this week. Performing under the title ‘The Road to Peace’, the monks will deliver a number of pieces that are meant to invoke forces for goodness and create a meditative mood amongst the audience.

Bienal Off On

The eclectic multi-disciplined art event Bienal Off is now underway on the island. Featuring a whole raft of events across the coming weeks.
Highlights include the exhibition New Home being staged at the Museum of International and Contemporary Art in Arrecife.  Which explores the theme of the clash between modern and traditional lifestyles on Lanzarote.  And opens from next Tuesday the 20th of October.

Autumn Sails – VIII César Manrique Trophy

The international wet-set will be descending on the luxury marina of Puerto Calero next week.  As the prestigious regatta – the 8th annual César Manrique Trophy – gets underway on Lanzarote from October 14th to 17th.

Major Classical Concert Series For Lanzarote

Lanzarote will be playing host some of the leading figures from the world of classical music next year. At a series of concerts that will be staged at the Camel House in Macher. Which is the brainchild of the well known arts entrepreneur and musician Sir Ernest Hall.
